When someone talks about the Algarve, south of Portugal, you are likely to be told wonders about the sunny weather, magic sunsets and moonlights, golden sand beaches, and blueish-green sea waters. Ah, and the mysterious, beautiful rock formations along the coastline with colours ranging from yellow-brown to reddish clay!
Algarve cities are typically and mostly painted white with a touch of different bright colours. Artful chimneys, shaped in different geometric figures are a beautiful symbol of the Algarve and its Moorish influence.
Be prepared to find contrasts between the very modern and the very old and most typical in the whole region.
Fisherman´s villages like the Alvor or Carvoeiro are delightful to visit, and superb fresh fish and seafood dishes are a must! Algarve local cuisine also includes delicate almond, fig and carob bean desserts as special treats along with its diverse liquors.
Away from the coastline, in the city of Silves major Moorish influences can be traced in its architecture and old castle. Caldas de Monchique, in the mountain of Monchique near Portimão, is unique in its diverse green nature and well known waters and spa.
Culture
Local culture is very alive and enriched with international cooperation in the performing arts. So, visit our theatres, museums, churches, and cinemas. Ask for a brochure of the local events (at Tourism, local Library, etc.).
